Buzz Harcus earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree at Michigan State University where he took creative writing, art, and television broadcasting. He was a producer and director of educational television at WKAR-TV in its formative years. His career changes also include Director of Public Relations for the Michigan Lung Association and Director of Health Education for the Saginaw County Department of Public Health, where he also served as media relations specialist. Buzz, and his wife, Barbara, are retired and live in northern Michigan.
Buzz, his name since he was a baby, began writing seriously in the late 1970’s, using his lunch hour to pound out ideas on his old manual typewriter. With the introduction of computers, it was much easier to pursue his ideas, turning his copy into finished manuscripts. Rejection was the name of the game. After each rejection, he did a re-write, until he finally said enough is enough. The manuscript is done. Now I need a publisher and an agent. Publishers said they only wanted agented authors; agents said they only wanted published authors. Catch 22.
In 2005, his first novel: China Marine: Tsingtao Treasure was published by Wolfenden Publishing of California. A Marine Corps veteran, Buzz had written the book primarily for a Marine audience, but the public also enjoyed the book. They loved the characters. In response to many requests, Buzz wrote: Tainted Treasure, a sequel, which was also well received. This is also when Buzz began self-publishing.
Web of Greed was his third book. Lansing State Journal book reviewer, Ray Walsh, said “the book is a fast-paced crime novel introducing Detective Sam August, who enjoys pretty women, drinking and sailing, but not in any specific order.”
In 2011 fellow retiree, Mike Allen, helped Buzz get all of his books on E-readers through Amazon.com Kindle, B&N Book Nook, and other such devices. Included in the books formatted for E-readers, is A Breath of Spring, now in print format, and his latest book, Thou Shalt Not, which is available on E-reader, and will be out by the fall of 2012. A compilation of short stories by Harcus can also be found on E-readers.
