Creative Projects

Members, share your favorite bookish project in your profile journal. The most popular ones (based on member comments) will be added to this list.

We will start it off with one of our favorites:

  • There are so many bloggers and crafters on the internet with wonderful ideas for making your own bookmarks - from the printable templates to the handmade ornate. Many make great gifts and are wonderful projects for the kiddies. http://nheilke.com/blog/?p=2628

  • Check out member HolyChristmas' current project: You know how sometimes adults lie to kids because they don't want to handle the requisite whining that comes after being told the facts? She wants to turn that into poetry!

From The Haunted Bookshop

On the return of a book lent to a friend:

I GIVE humble and hearty thanks for the safe return of this book which having endured the perils of my friend's bookcase, and the bookcases of my friend's friends, now returns to me in reasonably good condition.

I GIVE humble and hearty thanks that my friend did not see fit to give this book to his infant as a plaything, nor use it as an ash-tray for his burning cigar, nor as a teething-ring for his mastiff.

WHEN I lent this book I deemed it as lost: I was resigned to the bitterness of the long parting: I never thought to look upon its pages again.

BUT NOW that my book is come back to me, I rejoice and am exceeding glad! Bring hither the fatted morocco and let us rebind the volume and set it on the shelf of honour: for this my book was lent, and is returned again.

PRESENTLY, therefore, I may return some of the books that I myself have borrowed."

~Christopher Morley, The Haunted Bookshop

book drop icon Book enthusiasts read and collect. But, sharing a book and the experience of the read with someone else is the next best thing to collecting for many a true bibliophile.

What better way to share the excitement and passion than by literally passing a book along to another!

“Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens.” ~ Carlos Ruiz Zafón

Quotation Mark Never leave a friend behind. Friends are all we have to get us through this life--and they are the only things from this world that we could hope to see in the next.”

English is a Stupid Language
(Author unknown)

Lets face it
English is a stupid language.
There is no egg in the eggplant
No ham in the hamburger
And neither pine nor apple in the pineapple.
English muffins were not invented in England
French fries were not invented in France.

We sometimes take English for granted
But if we examine its paradoxes we find that
Quicksand takes you down slowly
Boxing rings are square
And a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

If writers write, how come fingers don’t fing?
If the plural of tooth is teeth
Shouldn’t the plural of phone booth be phone beeth?
If the teacher taught,
Why didn’t the preacher praught?

If a vegetarian eats vegetables
What the heck does a humanitarian eat!?
Why do people recite at a play?
Yet play at a recital?
Park on driveways and
Drive on parkways
How can the weather be as hot as hell on one day,
And as cold as hell on another

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy
Of a language where a house can burn up as
It burns down
And in which you fill in a form
By filling it out
And a bell is only heard once it goes off!

English was invented by people, not computers,
And it reflects the creativity of the human race
(Which of course isn’t a race at all)

That is why
When the stars are out they are visible
But when the lights are out they are invisible
And why it is that when I wind up my watch
It starts
But when I wind up this poem
It ends.
